Missions

Mike and Annie

Mike and Annie were sent by River Community Church to the western Ukrainian city of Uzhhorod in January 2012.  Along with their three children, they live in Ukraine year round.

Mike is vice-president of a regional Ukrainian charity fund and, since 2019, has been one of the pastors of New Creation church in Uzhhorod. From 2012-2022,  he also taught English at a local school of foreign languages.

Annie is an occupational therapist and provides physical rehabilitation to Ukrainians who have had strokes or traumatic brain injuries. In August 2022, she opened an out-patient clinic in Uzhhorod. In 2021, the Hallenbecks purchased land on which they hope to build the first center for physical rehabilitation in the Transcarpathian region.

“In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” Acts 20:35

Larry and Susan Salay

Larry and Susan have worked as missionaries with Wycliffe Bible Translators for 25 years. They were sent out in 2001 by River Community Church to Ecuador in South America.   There they lived and worked with the Salasaka people, helping the local church translate the Bible into their language, training Sunday School teachers, youth leaders and teaching people to read. The New Testament in Salasakan was dedicated and delivered in 2018.

Now relocated to North Carolina, Larry and Susan continue advancing the vision God gave them, to help bring His Holy Word to people of every language through Bible translation.  Susan works in the Learning and Development department, equipping missionaries for cross-cultural ministry. Larry checks Scripture translations for language groups in Venezuela and Peru. They feel grateful to be playing a part in God’s plan to make himself known to people of every tribe and language, and honored to have the family of River Community Church as partners for these many years.
